Artist Talk: Keri Miki-Lani Schroeder

Join us for a FREE all ages public demonstration given by artist Keri Miki-Lani Schroeder sponsored by The Central Arkansas Collective Gallery, Blackbird Arts Collective and The University of Central Arkansas.

The event is on Friday, April 4 from 6 - 7 PM at Espresso Evergreen at 1022 Oak Street in Conway, Arkansas.

Keri Miki-Lani Schroeder is an artist and writer based in Santa Fe, NM. She creates limited-edition artist’s books under the imprint of Coyote Bones Press, established in 2015. Schroeder holds an MFA in Book Art & Creative Writing from Mills College, and has worked as a studio assistant at Flying Fish Press and BookLab II as an edition bookbinder. In addition to her studio practice, Schroeder is currently the curator for The Palace Press at the New Mexico History Museum.

Schroeder was selected as the distinguished speaker for the Charles W.  Mann Lecture in the Book Arts at Penn State University in 2023, and as a grant recipient for the 2023 inaugural Center for Craft Teaching Artist Cohort. She was awarded the MCBA Prize in 2022 honoring excellence in book arts, and was the Salzberg Artist in Residence at Jaffe Center for Book Arts in 2019-2021. Schroeder produces and hosts Books in the Wild, a podcast about book arts and book history, and co-owns and designs enamel pins as The Paper Carnival with book artist Julie Chen.

Schroeder’s work examines objects and landscape as metaphors for the human experience. Reoccurring themes include ecology and environmental concerns, memory and mourning, relics and artifacts, the anomalous and paranormal. Her work takes form as sculptural book structures and found objects, combining traditional and contemporary bookbinding and printing techniques.

Her books are held in many prominent collections including UC Berkeley, Princeton, Stanford, Harvard, Tufts, Library of Congress, RISD, and The British Library.

Artist Talks: Soyoon Ahn

Soyoon Ahn is a potter, painter, and art educator.

She grew up in Seoul, Korea, and currently resides in Russellville, Arkansas. She has won many awards for her ceramics and Korean folk paintings.

She is a former Artist in Residence and pottery instructor at the River Valley Arts Center. She is teaching art classes at Arkansas Tech University.  

   Soyoon has produced functional wares for over 10 years. She launched her brand Soyoon Ahn Pottery in 2021. She is a gallery artisan in the Arkansas Craft Gallery in Mt. View and CALS, the Galleries and Bookstore at Library Square in Little Rock.

About the Workshop:

“In this step by step ‘playshop’ you will learn how to manipulate photos from your phone into a

repeat pattern fabric that you can have printed on a variety of fabrics, from basic quilting cotton

to knits and seersucker to use in sewing one of a kind garments, housewares and quilts. I will

walk you though two image manipulation apps and one layout app needed to create a repeat

pattern. After you have created your pattern I will guide you through creating a Spoonflower

account, uploading your design and ordering your fabric.

I will project the apps on a large screen while you play along. I’ll be there to hold you hand every

step of the way! I work with apple devices and those apps are my preference but Android options available.”

The Central Arkansas Collective presents a fascinating artist talk featuring sculptor and painter Kevin Kresse. Join us for an engaging evening as Kevin shares the process behind his thought-provoking work.

About the artist:

Kevin Kresse is an Arkansas native who supports his family as a painter and sculptor in Little Rock. He has exhibited his work around Arkansas and in New York, NY, Washington DC, Memphis, TN and Atlanta, GA.

Kresse has been awarded painting fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts – Mid-America Arts Alliance and the Arkansas Arts Council. He has also won several awards in the Arkansas Arts Center annual Delta competition.

Kresse’s work has been featured in articles in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the Arkansas Times, the North Little Rock Times, the Little Rock Free Press, Active Years magazine and Soiree magazine. He has also been featured in pieces produced by the local affiliates of ABC, CBS and PBS television, as well as a short film by Garret Larkin.

About the artist:

Joli Livaudais received her BA and MS in Experimental Psychology from the University of Texas at Arlington and her MFA from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana in 2013. She is currently an Associate Professor and head of the Photography program at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Her fine art photography explores both historical photographic processes and contemporary alternative methods, including gum bichromate printing, photo sculpture and installation, and incorporates her interest in both psychology and spirituality. Her artwork was exhibited in the “Paper Routes--Women to Watch 2020” exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC, and she was featured as a historical process gum bichromate artist in Christina Anderson’s text on the process, Gum Printing: A Step-By-Step Manual, Highlighting Artists and Their Creative Practice, published in 2016.
